Our client is a privately held Canadian owned consumer goods contract manufacturing company employing over 1200 people with headquarters in Toronto, ON.
Reporting into the Chief Executive Officer, this is an opportunity to take on the most senior legal leadership position within the organization.
As a key member of the leadership team, Vice President Legal is responsible to pro-actively provide legal and strategic advice on a wide range of corporate, commercial, contract, IP, and other matters to various members of the company.
He/she will provide day-to-day in-house legal support to all functional areas of the business including procurement, Product Management, Technology, Marketing, Sales, HR, and Finance.
This legal professional will also take the lead to pro-actively review and advise on new and pending legislation on a range of applicable topics to the company.
He/she will also work with external legal counsel to assist with the assessment and resolution of legal issues while managing the relationship to ensure efficient, timely, and useful services delivery.

The ideal candidate will be someone who has a mix of in-house and firm experience with a strong focus on contract law. They will have either managed a team of in-house legal counsel or junior associates and are looking to take the next step in their career to become the top legal executive in a fast-paced consumer-focused company. They will be an individual with high energy, results orientated and a sense of urgency, a strong work ethic, and a team focused leadership approach which is “hands-on”. It also requires an approach that is solution and support-oriented; collaborative, transparent, and direct; and an ability to build strong respectful relationships and communicate effectively and persuasively with others. Disciplined and process focused. An ability to understand and work with the culture of the business and a leadership approach that engages the Board of Directors, management, and staff in setting goals, organizational change, and improvements are also required.
- 10+ years post-call experience working in both a law firm and or an in-house role (ideally corporate/commercial/contract law)
- Strong Contract Law expertise.
- Solutions-oriented with good business sense and pragmatic approach to day-to-day business and legal issues.
- Ability to build and lead a legal team.
- Superior communication and negotiation skills with an ability to articulate a clear and compelling vision and lead others to implement it;
